The LGBTQ Movement, Marriage, and New Models of the Family in the United States
While marriage equality between same-sex and heterosexual couples has been a central focus of LGBT rightsâ movements, there was not and is not a unified acceptance of marriage as an object worthy of pursuing. Debates existed about whether the goal of marriage excluded other types of more diverse, pluralistic family formations that bucked standard conceptions, and some activists insisted that marriage be eschewed (âNeJaime, 2014). Marriage was furthermore linked to patriarchyâa social system in which power is predominantly held by men, with women holding subordinate roles within the marriage and to heteronormativity, meaning that heterosexuality is considered the primary model against which other sexualities are judged. Activist groups like the Gay Liberation Front and Radical Lesbians, in the 1970s, argued that women in marital relationships were oppressed, and the nuclear family worked against same-sex relationships.
As one queer theorist contends,
The Courtâs opinion in Obergefell aggressively endorses a specific conception of the good intimate lifeâone that is firmly ensconced in the dominant cultureâs understanding of intimacy and family formation. Consequently, it ends up demeaning queer-identified and other non-assimilationist lesbian, gay, bisexual, and heterosexual individuals.
